the honest version

no contact, and you genuinely don't want them back

No contact works exactly the same when you have no intention of reconciling — arguably better, because you are not secretly measuring whether it is working. It is not a strategy to make someone miss you. It is how you stop an attachment being fed while it fades.

Search anything about no contact and you will drown in advice about what they are thinking on day 21 and when they will reach out. Almost all of it assumes one thing: that you want them back and this is the tactic.

If that is not you, that entire genre is useless — and slightly poisonous, because it keeps pointing your attention at them.

what the rule is actually doing

No contact is not a message you are sending by staying quiet. It works on you, not on them. Every day you do not reach out, a pathway that says "contact them and the ache stops" goes unreinforced. That is the mechanism, and it runs whether or not they ever notice.

Which means the version where you do not want them back is the clean version. You are not checking your phone to see if it worked. You are not measuring their silence for meaning. You are just letting something fade without feeding it.

the tell

If you catch yourself wondering what day they will crack, no contact has quietly become a strategy again. Nothing has gone wrong — it is worth noticing, because a rule aimed at them is a rule that keeps them central.

so why is it still hard

Because wanting to text someone is not the same as wanting them back. You can be certain the relationship is over and still miss them at midnight. Both of those are true at once, and the second does not undo the first.

People get stuck here because they read the urge as evidence. It is not evidence. After a breakup, rejection lights up circuitry that behaves a lot like craving — the pull is real and it means nothing about whether you should go back.

what changes practically

One honest note about this app, since it belongs here: it is built for exactly this case. Onboarding asks whether you are trying to heal or trying to get them back, and if the answer is get them back, this is the wrong tool and we would rather say so.

if it's heavier than a breakup

If you're thinking about hurting yourself, please don't sit with it alone — call or text 988(US Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), or your local emergency number. We're peer support, not a crisis service, and this is the one thing we'd never want you to use us for.

the hard part isn't the counting.

It's 2am, and a number can't answer you. NO CONTACT CLUB puts 3–5 real people at your exact stage on the other end of one shared streak — so when the urge hits, you text them instead of your ex.
