before you send it

should you text your ex?

3 min read · peer support, not therapy

You already typed it, didn't you. It's sitting there.

Here's the straight answer: almost certainly not tonight. Not because contact is forbidden forever, but because the version of you that's awake right now is not the one who should be making this call. Nothing about your situation will be worse in the morning. Most things will be clearer.

four questions, sixty seconds

that last one is the real question

Most 2am texts aren't attempts to reconnect. They're attempts to make an unbearable feeling stop by moving it into someone else. That's a legitimate need — it just has a better address than their inbox.

what to do with the message instead

Don't delete it. Deleting it makes you feel like you swallowed something. Move it: send it somewhere it will actually be received, by someone who isn't them and isn't a bot. The words leave your fingers, they land with a person, and they don't land on your ex. That's the trade that works.

The person who wrote the most useful thing we've read on this described exactly that need — a person to message — whenever — they felt like messaging their ex, because sometimes the message needs to be seen even if nobody replies.

the honest exceptions

Contact isn't a moral failure and there are real reasons to break it: shared kids, shared lease, shared dog, logistics with a deadline, or safety. Those are fine. Send the logistics text, keep it to the logistics, and don't attach a paragraph to it.

if it's heavier than a breakup

If you're thinking about hurting yourself, please don't sit with it alone — call or text 988(US Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), or your local emergency number. We're peer support, not a crisis service, and this is the one thing we'd never want you to use us for.

the hard part isn't the counting.

It's 2am, and a number can't answer you. NO CONTACT CLUB puts 3–5 real people at your exact stage on the other end of one shared streak — so when the urge hits, you text them instead of your ex.
