the stalk urge

how to stop checking their instagram

3 min read · peer support, not therapy

You're not doing it because you want to see them. You're doing it because not knowing is unbearable, and looking makes the not-knowing stop for about forty seconds.

why it's worse than texting

Texting at least ends. Checking doesn't — there's always another story, another mutual, another post to interpret. It keeps the relationship alive in your head every single day without ever giving you anything back. That's rumination running on a schedule, and rumination is the actual mechanism that keeps you attached.

It also escalates. People describe going months without contact while both of them quietly checked and posted things aimed at each other — until it turned back into real contact. One person called it a "HUGE MISTAKE." Another said even checking "here and there" sent them back to square one.

the tell

If you've ever posted something and then wondered whether they'd see it — you're not on no contact. You're in a slower conversation.

what actually stops it

when you slip and look

You will. Don't turn it into a referendum. Note what you were doing right before, close it, and don't spend the next hour analysing what you saw — the analysis is the harmful part, not the glance.

if it's heavier than a breakup

If you're thinking about hurting yourself, please don't sit with it alone — call or text 988(US Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), or your local emergency number. We're peer support, not a crisis service, and this is the one thing we'd never want you to use us for.

the hard part isn't the counting.

It's 2am, and a number can't answer you. NO CONTACT CLUB puts 3–5 real people at your exact stage on the other end of one shared streak — so when the urge hits, you text them instead of your ex.
